
Brahmaputra river swallowed 4.27 lakh hectares of Assam land: Govt tells Assembly

Replying in a written query raised by AIUDF MLA Sirajuddin Ajmal in the state assembly, Assam Water Resources Minister Pijush Hazarika said the state has lost 4.27 lakh hectares of land due to soil erosion caused by the Brahmaputra river.
The Assam government told the state assembly on Wednesday that the state has lost about 4.27 lakh hectares of land due to soil erosion caused by the Brahmaputra River. Replying to a written query raised by All India United Democratic Front (AIUDF) MLA Sirajuddin Ajmal, Assam Water Resources Minister Pijush Hazarika said flood and erosion are the main disasters caused by the river Brahmaputra, Barak and its tributaries.
A prominent seer, Pranavananda Swamiji, alleged that mutts backing Karnataka Deputy Chief Minister DK Shivakumar to take over the top post were denied any allocation in the state budget presented by Chief Minister Siddaramaiah. He reiterated his support for Shivakumar to take over as the chief minister.
