Book on 150-year history of Virudhunagar district released

Minister Thangam Thennarasu releases historical book on Virudhunagar District, highlighting cultural and industrial significance under DMK Government.
Minister for Finance and Archaeology Thangam Thennarasu on Wednesday released a book, Glimpses of Virudhunagar District (1800-1950), A Historical Journey, brought out by Virudhunagar district administration.
The first copy of the book was received by Collector V.P. Jeyaseelan in the presence of former Vice-Chancellor of Swami Vivekand University, Madhya Pradesh, K.A. Manikumar.
Mr. Thennarasu said that knowing the history was important for anyone to get inspired from the pride of his/her language and land to make big acheivements in the future.
Under the DMK Government, the cultural past of the Tamils has been unearthed through archaeological excavations across the State. While Keeladi revealed the antiquity of Tamil language, Sivakalai excavation has thrown light on the technical knowledge of Tamils over 5,000 years back.
The Minister said that different parts of Virudhunagar district had the shades of cultures of Tirunelveli, Madurai and Ramanathapuram districts. However, Virudhunagar district had its unique identity in terms of industry, trade, archaeology and literature.
He appreciated the efforts of the Collector, Dr. Manikumar, and 30 teachers, researchers of history, five Professors of Departments of History, who brought out the book which would be treasure for the future generations.
The Collector said that southern districts came under a good administrative set up only during the British regime, which led to the social , political, cultural and industrial development of Virudhunagar.
