BMS College for Women hosts Jaanapada Jaatre celebrating folk traditions in Bengaluru

BMS College for Women celebrates Karnataka's folk traditions at Jaanapada Jaatre 2026 with music, performances, and cultural stalls.

BMS College for Women, Basavanagudi, hosted Jaanapada Jaatre 2026 – Janapada Aashayagala Hudukaata, a celebration of Karnataka’s rich folk traditions, on February 4.

Chief guest Professor Krishne Gowda, noted Kannada scholar and comedian, highlighted the cultural depth of folk arts, stating that ‘Janapada is a lifestyle and a knowledge system’. He emphasised that indigenous traditions carry wisdom beyond textbooks, especially significant in a fast‑growing cosmopolitan city like Bengaluru.

The event started with an innovative unveiling of the banner using drones, followed by a colourful procession through Basavanagudi and Gandhi Bazaar. A large number of students performed Karnataka’s traditional art forms, including Karaga, Yakshagana, Lambani Nritya, Kansale, Suggi Kunita, and Kolata.

Dr. B.S. Ragini Narayan, donor trustee of BMS Education Trust and chairperson of the college, presided over the programme, which featured folk music by Kambada Rangaiah, along with traditional games, cultural performances, and stalls showcasing rural artistry.
