
BMC engineer, aide arrested for demanding Rs 70k bribe

As per the complaint received by BMC, the complainant, who is a journalist, had said that his friend, who is a contractor, had built a house in Govandi. The necessary permission was not sought from BMC authorities, following which BMC’s M East ward issued notice on the property for demolition.
The Anti-Corruption Bureau (ACB) of Maharashtra police on Tuesday arrested two BMC (Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation) employees for demanding and accepting bribe of Rs 70,000. The two had taken money for not demolishing an illegal structure in Govandi locality of Eastern Mumbai. As per the complaint received by BMC, the complainant, who is a journalist, had said that his friend, who is a contractor, had built a house in Govandi. The necessary permission was not sought from BMC authorities, following which BMC’s M East ward issued notice on the property for demolition. The contractor then asked his journalist friend to intervene. When the journalist met the accused, Sunil Masode (24), at M East ward of BMC, he demanded Rs 70,000 for not initiating demolition of the said property in Govandi.
A prominent seer, Pranavananda Swamiji, alleged that mutts backing Karnataka Deputy Chief Minister DK Shivakumar to take over the top post were denied any allocation in the state budget presented by Chief Minister Siddaramaiah. He reiterated his support for Shivakumar to take over as the chief minister.
