Furore over the Registration of Marriages (Amendment) Bill, 2021 continued in Rajasthan, with the Opposition BJP's youth wing demanding a rollback, even as the NCPCR raised concerns that the bill legitimizes child marriage in the state.
Hundreds of BJP youth wing activists staged protests and submitted a memorandum demanding the repeal of the Registration of Marriages (Amendment) Bill, 2021 on the grounds that it makes registration of child marriages mandatory in the state.
Earlier this month, the Bill was passed through voice vote, and sought to amend the 2009 Act to make registration of all marriages within 30 days mandatory. The BJP, principal Opposition party in Rajasthan, maintains that the bill which was passed by the state Assembly, will legalize child marriage in the state.
