Bike Taxi Association in Coimbatore seeks police protection against threats from autorickshaw drivers, faces protest demanding ban.
The Bike Taxi Association (BTA) in Coimbatore on Monday petitioned the City Police Commissioner V. Balakrishnan, seeking protection from the police to operate their services.
The petition said that bike taxi drivers were being prevented from operating their service and some of them faced threats from autorickshaw drivers. People who were using the service were also facing threats, it claimed.
The petitioners also stated that the Minister for Transport, Tamil Nadu, recently clarified that there was no ban on bike taxis in the State.
A section of autorickshaw drivers staged a protest near Town Hall in Coimbatore on Monday, demanding a ban on bike taxi service. More than 100 autorickshaw drivers squatted on the side of the road and staged a silent protest wearing black masks. The protest continued till 5 p.m.
