A major drug smuggling attempt was foiled in Bihar after officials of the Directorate of Revenue Intelligence seized charas worth over Rs 77 lakh near the India-Nepal border, uncovering an unusual method of concealment inside a motorcycle.
The operation was carried out by the Patna regional unit of the DRI following specific intelligence inputs about cross-border drug trafficking in East Champaran district.
Acting on the tip-off, DRI officials set up surveillance and intercepted a motorcycle near the Chhapwa–Turkaulia road in the district. At the time of interception, a man was riding a bike and carrying a jute sack.
When officials checked the jute sack, they recovered 63 packets of a suspicious substance. A field drug testing kit was used at the spot, which confirmed that the substance was charas.
During further examination, officers uncovered a more sophisticated smuggling method used in the vehicle.
A detailed search of the motorcycle revealed that a secret compartment had been created inside its petrol tank. In addition, a separate auxiliary engine system had been installed under the seat to store contraband.
