Bengaluru received a staggering 105.5 mm rainfall in a 24-hour period (between 8.30 a.m. of Sunday and 8.30 a.m. of Monday) which is the second highest since 2011. In May, 2022, Bengaluru recorded 114.6 mm rainfall and the all-time record for May is 153. 9 mm recorded on May 6, 1909.

According to IMD data recorded at 8.30 a.m. on Monday, the Bengaluru HAL Airport and Kempegowda International Airport recorded 78.3 mm and 105.5 mm, respectively.
IMD observation data further stated that for a period of nine hours (between 8.30 a.m. and 5.30 p.m. on Sunday), the Bengaluru City meteorological station received zero mm of rainfall. The record rainfall occurred between 5.30 p.m. on Sunday and 8.30 a.m. on Monday.
As per Karnataka State Natural Disaster Monitoring Centre (KSNDMC) data, many locations in Bengaluru received over 100 mm rainfall between 8.30 a.m. of Sunday and 7 p.m. of Monday.
They include: Kengeri (132 mm), Bengaluru KSNDMC campus GEO (125.8 mm), Somashettihalli (119.5 mm), Madanayakanahalli (116.5 mm), and Yelahanka Chowdeshwari (103.5 mm).
Director of the India Meteorological Department (IMD), Bengaluru, C.S. Patil said that the amount of rain Bengaluru and the neighbourhood received during the 24-hour period was rare.
“This is the pre-monsoon rain. This quantity of rain is rare for May though there have been instances of the city receiving more than 100 mm, with the most recent one being in 2022,” Mr. Patil said.
