
Auction of idol stolen from Nagapattinam temple stopped in Netherlands

Tamil Nadu police halt auction of stolen idol from Nagapattinam temple, initiating repatriation process from Netherlands.
The Idol Wing CID of the Tamil Nadu police have stopped the auction of an idol reported stolen from a temple in Nagapattinam 15 years ago.
According to an official release, the Kannappa Nayanar metal idol was stolen from Arulmigu Agneeswaraswamy temple at Thirupugalur in Nagapattinam district in 2010 by unidentified persons. A case was registered by the Thittachery police in this regard.
During the course of ongoing investigation, police received an input that the idol was kept at the European Fine Art Exhibition, 2025, held at Maastricht in the Netherlands for auction.
Acting on the input, investigators took up the matter with their counterpart in the Netherlands and officers of Archaeological Survey of India (ASI) to stop the auction of the idol. Due to the timely intervention, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Netherlands, took custody of Kannappa Nayanar idol on March 23, 2025.
Legal procedures were initiated to repatriate the idol from the Netherlands to India, the release said.
