A 28-year-old woman was allegedly gangraped and extorted of Rs 10,000 by seven men in front of her boyfriend in Assam. Two people have been arrested in the matter after the survivor identified them, while a search is on to identify and arrest the remaining accused.
The woman registered a complaint about the incident, which happened on February 19, and a case has been registered in this connection, a senior police officer told news agency PTI.
The case was registered at Silchar Sadar Police Station under sections 308 (5) (extortion by death threat), 310 (2) (dacoity), 351(2) (criminal intimidation), 61(2) (unlawful act committed by two or more persons, 70(1) (gang rape), 76 (criminal force against woman with intent to disrobe her or compel her to be naked), 79 (Word, gesture or act intended to insult the modesty of a woman) of the Bharatiya Nyay Sanhita, according to the police.
Her statement has been recorded and further investigation into the matter is underway.
Meanwhile, a Silchar-based journalist, who had reported the incident, was allegedly thrashed by the family members of one of the accused. He claimed that he was stopped by the members near the ational Highway Road police station, asked why he reported the case and then attacked before being saved by onlookers.
The journalist has also filed a complaint in connection with the assault, and the police have arrested one person.
