
Assam: Over 25 shops gutted after fire breaks out at Dibrugarh market

A massive fire broke out at Dibrugarh's market in the wee hours of Wednesday in which around 25 shops were destroyed. The blaze was so intense that fire tenders from BPCL and Oil India Limited were called in to douse the flames.
At least 25 shops were gutted after a massive fire broke out at market area in Assam's Dibrugarh around 3 am on Wednesday morning, as per news agency ANI. Initially, the fire broke out at a shop in the wee hours today which engulfed the entire area within a few minutes and the fire kept blazing for hours.
Local fire tenders rushed to the spot to douse the flames but were unable to bring the situation under control. Later on, fire tenders from state fire services, Mohanbadi airport, Duliajan-based Oil India and Brahmaputra Cracker and Polymer Limited (BCPL) were pressed into service to douse the flames.
The residents of the fire expressed strong resentment as the local fire brigade team was unsuccessful in controlling the fire.
Notably, ahead of the popular Bihu festival in the state, which is celebrated with great pomp and show, the shopkeepers had ordered a large inventory. An initial enquiry revealed that properties worth crores of rupees were destroyed in the fire and the reason behind the blaze is yet to be ascertained.

A prominent seer, Pranavananda Swamiji, alleged that mutts backing Karnataka Deputy Chief Minister DK Shivakumar to take over the top post were denied any allocation in the state budget presented by Chief Minister Siddaramaiah. He reiterated his support for Shivakumar to take over as the chief minister.
