Area in Maharashtra’s Sindhudurg named as biodiversity heritage site

A new freshwater fish species — Schistura Hiranyakeshi — was discovered near Amboli in Sawantwadi tehsil of Sindhudurg district.
The Maharashtra government on Wednesday declared an area at Amboli in Western ghats in Sindhudurg district, where a rare freshwater fish species was discovered, as a biodiversity heritage site. Chief Minister Uddhav Thackeray’s son Tejas Thackeray, who is a wildlife researcher, and his team had discovered the new freshwater fish species — Schistura Hiranyakeshi — near Amboli in Sawantwadi tehsil of Sindhudurg district. Schistura Hiranyakeshi is a rare sub-species of Schistura, a freshwater loach. The fish was named after the Hiranyakeshi river near Amboli village.
The Collector distributed awareness materials on fortified rice at the Collectorate on Wednesday, and also inspected the rice kept on display. He said that the rice contains three nutrients: iron, folic acid and vitamin B12, that will address anaemia and micro-nutrient deficiencies among the people.

The Supreme Court on March 29 gave the Home Ministry exactly two weeks to collate data on action taken by at least eight States regarding the registration of FIRs, status of investigation, arrests and charge sheets filed in incidents petitioners allege as attacks targeting Christian community and institutions. Chief Justice of India D. Y. Chandrachud pointed out that the order to collate the details and file a report in the apex court was given to the Ministry in September last year. Additional Solicitor General Aishwarya Bhati, for the Ministry, said some of the States took time to respond.
