Scientists discovered a series of skeletons sitting upright at an excavation site in France in January 2025.
Researchers in France made a chilling discovery earlier this year, finding skeletons buried in a seated position during an excavation at a school.
According to a March 18 news release by the French National Institute for Preventive Archaeological Research, five skeletons were found in January 2025 at the Joséphine Baker school in Dijon, about 198 miles from Paris. Photos of the skeletons show them sitting on their buttocks with their heads down and their legs crossed.
Scientists believe the skeletons could date back to the second Iron Age.
It's believed the skeletons came from Gallic burials. At least five of them bear unhealed marks of violence, including cuts on the humerus, which are indicative of intentional killing, according to the news release. One of the skeletons had blunt force injuries to the skull from a sharp object, but it's not known what weapon could have caused the injuries.
"These structures are generally well preserved despite significant erosion that has caused the displacement or even destruction of the less deeply buried bones," the news release states.
