Calgary police say an alleged carjacker is in custody after stealing a car, crashing it into a power line, and backing it into a fire truck.
The car was stolen from a man in his '70s around 5:30 p.m. near the 200 block of Walden Mews S.E. The man and his grandchild got out of the car before the alleged carjacker drove off, police said.
Police say the stolen car crashed into a power pole less than 10 minutes later, near the intersection of Shawville Road S.E. and Shawville Boulevard S.E.
When the Calgary Fire Department arrived on scene, the driver of the car backed into a fire truck, police said.
"Fortunately, the very quick-thinking fire truck operator was able to push that stolen vehicle back into the power pole and sort of keep them in place," Calgary Police Service Staff Sgt. John Guigon told CBC News.
Police arrived and arrested the alleged carjacker, a 23-year-old male, who is now in custody and facing charges including robbery and impaired driving.
"This is the first situation where CFD got involved and were able to play a significant role in the apprehension of the offender," Guigon said.
