Ahead of new year, police crack down on drug peddlers in Bengaluru

As part of the crackdown, several teams carried surprise checks at the houses of 380 habitual offenders, and checked 1,633 bars and restaurants, and over 1,020 lodges.

In order to ensure peaceful celebration of new year and ensure law and order, Bengaluru police launched a special drive against the drug menace, and carried out intensive search and seizure operations across the black spots in the city.

As part of the plan, several teams carried surprise checks at the houses of 380 habitual offenders, and checked 1,633 bars and restaurants, and over 1,020 lodges. Police seized 1.1 kg of marijuana worth ₹40,000, and arrested three persons from whom the drugs were seized. During the search of lodges, the police rescued six foreign women who were forced into prostitution.

Continuing the crackdown, the police checked the documents of 411 foreign nationals. Out of these, 29 were overstaying and have been handed over to Foreigners Regional Registration Office (FRRO) for deportation process.

As many as 874 police officials have carried out awareness programme in 460 colleges, 302 hostels and covered 61,398 students to advise them against drug abuse, cyber crime and women’s safety. The police sought cooperation from the students and asked them to share information whenever they come across drug peddling.

The police have also cracked down on begging on streets. They booked 12 women, and rescued 16 minor children who were used in begging. The detained women and children were handed over to State-run homes for women for rehabilitation, city Police Commissioner B. Dayananda said.
