'A devoted champion for his community': Sudbury city councillor Gerry Montpellier dies

Greater Sudbury city councillor Gerry Montpellier died on Wednesday afternoon, less than two weeks after his colleague Michael Vagnini was found dead.
Montpellier had been ill in recent months and spent time in hospital.
"It is heartbreaking and unfathomable that we find ourselves mourning Gerry even as we continue to grieve the late Councillor Michael Vagnini," Greater Sudbury Mayor Paul Lefebvre said at the start of a council meeting Wednesday evening.
Vagnini, 62, was reported missing on Jan. 27 and found dead on Feb. 13. He and Montpellier were both first elected to council in 2014 and were on the same side of many issues, including their belief in preserving the volunteer fire brigades in the outlying areas of the city.
"Gerry was a devoted champion for his community and a loyal proponent of his constituents. He was a supportive presence at many events across the city, particularly those with his beloved classic cars," Lefebvre said.
"Gerry touched the lives of so many of us across Greater Sudbury and we will miss him."
Before entering politics, Montpellier worked as a racetrack announcer, marine appraiser and auctioneer.
He leaves behind a wife and one son.
