A 32-year-old man, Rigzin Dawa, was arrested by police officials in Ladakh’s Leh district for raping and murdering a woman. He was nabbed within three hours of committing the gruesome crime, said a senior police officer on Thursday.
The victim, a 55-year-old woman, was found murdered at her residence in Sheynam in the wee hours of Wednesday, said Leh Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP), PD Nitya, to news agency PTI.
A police party was immediately rushed to the crime scene, added the SSP. Preliminary investigation suggested that the woman was assaulted and raped before being strangled and murdered.
During the probe, officials identified Rigzin Dawa, a resident of Leh’s Sheynam, who was a notorious character.
Suspicion about his involvement in the crime was further strengthened when scratch marks were found on his neck and shoulder. Some blood stains were also found on his legs, added the SSP.
When questioned by the police, Dawa admitted to the crime.
"Important pieces of evidence like the undergarments of the accused were also recovered from the scene of the crime. The evidence has been to be sent to the Forensic Science Laboratory for further investigation," said SSP Nitya.
