The elder of two brothers who killed an 18-year-old for no reason pleaded guilty to manslaughter on Friday.
Danillo Canales Glenn was playing basketball with two friends at the Copperfield Community Centre in southeast Calgary when he was beaten and fatally stabbed by 16- and 18-year-old brothers.
The older brother can’t be named because doing so would reveal the identity of the younger brother, which is protected by a publication ban under the Youth Criminal Justice Act.
Both brothers were originally charged with second-degree murder. The younger teen was found guilty of the lesser offence of manslaughter last December following a trial.
On Friday, after negotiations between defence lawyer Andrea Urquhart and prosecutor Vicki Faulkner, the older brother pleaded guilty to manslaughter.
Reports were ordered, including a risk assessment, and the now-young man who attended court with five members of his family, will be sentenced in the new year.
An agreed statement of facts (ASF) filed as part of the plea details the crime.
On the evening of Sept. 5, 2023, Canales Glenn was playing basketball with two friends at the Copperfield Community Centre.
The community centre park includes a hockey rink with boards around it and four basketball nets, used in the summer.
At the time, several younger children were also playing near the older teens.
The two killers lived nearby in the southeast community.
Around 7:40 p.m., the two brothers approached Canales Glenn and his friends with their hoods pulled up over their heads and “were looking at the individuals inside the rink,” according to the ASF.
Canales Glenn said something like “what are you looking at.”
The brothers jumped the boards and headed straight to the trio. Canales Glenn stood between the two assailants and his friends, one of whom said, “Let’s calm down.” But the older brother pulled a can of bear spray out of his fanny pack while his younger brother grabbed a knife.
