Early onset of Southwest monsoon in Telangana brings hope for above-normal rainfall, but caution advised for premature conclusions.
The Southwest monsoon has officially entered Telangana on Monday (May 26, 2025), marking a significantly early onset compared to previous years, a senior scientist from the India Meteorological Department (IMD) confirmed.
Speaking to The Hindu, A. Dharma Raju, scientist at IMD Centre Hyderabad said that the monsoon has already touched parts of seven districts, including areas in Mahbubnagar. “Usually, it takes two to three days for the monsoon to cover the entire State. But this time, if conditions remain favourable, it may sweep across Telangana, including Hyderabad, within a single day,” he said.
This year’s monsoon onset is ahead of schedule. “The normal onset date for Telangana is June 10. Compared to last year, the monsoon has arrived 16 to 17 days in advance,” the scientist said, attributing the early arrival to favourable meteorological conditions such as rainfall patterns, wind flow, solar radiation, and moisture transport from surrounding regions.
While early onset may raise hopes of a strong monsoon season, the IMD official cautioned against premature conclusions. “People often believe that a longer monsoon duration translates to more rainfall, but that’s not always the case. Some years it holds true, but at times it can also result in extended dry spells,” he explained.
However, the long-range forecast for this year remains optimistic. “We are expecting above-normal rainfall across the State,” the official said, urging residents to stay updated with official forecasts in the coming weeks.
