
17 Tamil fishermen arrested by Sri Lankan Navy for crossing maritime border

17 fishermen were arrested by the Sri Lankan Navy for crossing the maritime border. Of these, five were held near Karainagar and the rest were held from Kodiyakarai region.
17 Tamil fishermen were apprehended by the Sri Lankan Navy for crossing the International Maritime Border Line. Of these, five fishermen from Jagathapattinam, who were fishing near Karainagar, were apprehended and were taken to Karainagar camp on Monday.
Their boat and fuel were also seized by the Lankan Navy.
Furthermore, 12 Indian fishermen, five from Karaikal and seven from Mayiladuthurai, were fishing southeast of Kodiyakarai when they were apprehended on Sunday.
Tamil Nadu Chief Minister MK Stalin has written a letter to the External Affairs Minister, S Jaishankar, seeking his intervention.
CM Stalin stated that after a gap of 61 days, fishermen in the state have resumed fishing. He wrote, "This arrest intimidates the fishermen of Tamil Nadu and is also likely to create a sense of insecurity and fear in coastal areas. I, therefore, request you to take up this matter through appropriate diplomatic channel and secure the immediate release of the fishermen and their fishing boat."

A prominent seer, Pranavananda Swamiji, alleged that mutts backing Karnataka Deputy Chief Minister DK Shivakumar to take over the top post were denied any allocation in the state budget presented by Chief Minister Siddaramaiah. He reiterated his support for Shivakumar to take over as the chief minister.

According to the police, 19-year-old Sachin Dharmendrabhai Chaudhary, who works as a labourer, had borrowed the money before expressing his inability to repay it immediately, police said. He was allegedly threatened with his life over the delay in repayment. Fearing for his life, Sachin immediately alerted the police.
