15-year-old boy suffers 'significant and serious' injuries in sword attack at Brandon high school: police

A 16-year-old boy has been arrested after he allegedly attacked another boy with a sword at a Brandon, Man., high school on Tuesday afternoon, police said.
Brandon police say they got a call at 1:15 p.m. from a student at Neelin High School, saying a boy was "going crazy holding a sword," Insp. Jason Dupuis said at a news conference early Tuesday evening.
The school was under a lockdown when police arrived. Officers found a 16-year-old armed with a sword inside, and used a stun gun to disarm him, said Dupuis. The teen was taken into custody less than 10 minutes after the initial call.
A 15-year-old boy was found with "significant and serious" injuries, including stab wounds to the chest, forearms, hands and thigh, police said.
The victim was taken to hospital for medical treatment and was later in stable condition, according to police.
The school's lockdown was lifted later Tuesday afternoon, as police said there was no continued threat to staff or students.
"Our hearts go out to the victim and his family, as well as to the students and staff of Neelin High School and all first responders who were involved in the incident," Dupuis said.
Brandon police said the incident is still under investigation, and further updates will be made public at a Wednesday morning news conference.
Neelin High School Principal Baseswa Nundu said in a statement Tuesday that the school will be open on Wednesday, but Grade 12 provincial exams scheduled for Wednesday and Thursday will not take place.
Nundu said social workers and counselling staff will be on site in the library on Wednesday for any students who need support.
