Duvvada police arrest woman with 102 ganja packets worth ₹13 lakh; crackdown on smuggling continues in Visakhapatnam.
The Duvvada police on Friday arrested a woman from Tamil Nadu who was allegedly in possession of 102 ganja here on November 28. The estimate worth of ganja seized is said to be about ₹13 lakh.
Addressing a press conference at the city police conference hall on Friday, Deputy Commissioner of Police (Zone II) Mary Prasanthi said that based on credible information, the Duvvada police caught a woman with 51 packets of ganja, with each packet weighing about two kg. During the inquiry, the police have learnt that the woman who hails from Madurai in Tamil Nadu has come to the erstwhile Visakhapatnam district along with her uncle named Lakshmanan Sekhar. After procuring ganja, her uncle has left for Madurai and she was making arrangements to transport the ganja to their destination.
“During further inquiry, we would ascertain the links including from whom they have procured ganja and whom they are planning to sell,” the DCP said.
Following directions from the State Government and under the supervision of Commissioner of Police Shankabratha Bagchi, the city police have been laying strict watch on the movement of ganja smuggling. Special teams are patrolling at various places, while static checkposts are being arranged. This apart, sniffer dogs are being deputed by the dogs squad to check smuggling activities at various places. She said that PD Act may be invoked against people involved in more than one ganja case and further they can be expelled from the city.

About 923 families of Nagarathar community arrived from across the globe at Nattarasankottai in Sivaganga district to celebrate the traditional ‘Sevvai Pongal’ festival. This annual event serves as a massive international reunion for the Nagarathar community people. Local residents said while many might miss major holidays like Pongal or Deepavali, they made every effort to attend Sevvai Pongal, which was held on the first Tuesday following Pongal. This tradition had been upheld by the community for over two centuries.
