A ₹1.48-crore bamboo park in Coimbatore nears completion, promising diverse flora and amenities for public enjoyment.
The ₹1.48-crore bamboo park coming up in the city is nearing completion and will be opened to the public soon, Corporation officials said.
Semmozhi Park in Gandhipuram has been drawing heavy footfall since its recent opening, with weekday visitors estimated at around 10,000 and weekend numbers nearing 30,000. The Periyar Library and Science Centre in the same locality was stated to be in the final stages of construction.
Work on the bamboo park is under way on 4.5 acres between SIHS Colony and Cauvery Nagar near Neelikonampalayam in Ward 55. The project, funded through the Corporation’s general fund, commenced in September last year after the foundation stone was laid.
Corporation officials said the park would feature more than 20 tree species, over 25 plant varieties and several bamboo species. Trees such as Terminalia arjuna, Pongamia pinnata, Mimusops elengi and Butea monosperma were being planted. Bamboo varieties including Bambusa vulgaris and Phyllostachys aurea, along with medicinal and ornamental plants such as Cymbopogon citratus, were also being added. Officials noted that while most trees were native species, certain bamboo and ornamental varieties had been sourced from abroad.
The park would also include amenities such as a walking track, drinking water facilities, toilets, children’s play equipment, a yoga space, metal sculptures and purified drinking water points.
The project has been developed following the model of the 12-acre bamboo park in Tiruppur. The objective is to create a natural green leisure area for the public. The work is progressing at a steady pace, and the project is expected to be completed by the end of this month and opened shortly thereafter.
