Much like other respiratory illnesses, the avian flu is transmitted when an infected bird is in close enough contact to spread the virus through "saliva, nasal secretions, and feces," the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention reports. Extreme cases of avian flu can sometimes lead to a bird’s death, which has drawn concern from zoos.
