Woman hospitalized with life-threatening injuries after tent fire in Etobicoke: police

Toronto police say a woman in her 50s is in hospital with life-threatening injuries after a tent fire in Etobicoke Tuesday.
Officers were called to the area of Lake Shore Boulevard and Eighth Street at around 9:45 a.m. for reports of an assault in the area, the Toronto Police Service said in a post on social media Tuesday.
Upon arrival, police located a woman on fire inside a tent engulfed in flames, Duty Insp. Peter Wallace said Tuesday afternoon.
“Our thoughts are with this person as she receives treatment,” he said.
Wallace said the woman was removed from the tent and rushed to a trauma centre. Emergency Medical Services told CBC Toronto they transported an adult woman to a local hospital with life-threatening injuries.
Toronto Fire Services confirmed they responded to reports of a fire near a building. A wooden structure in the rear of the building was on fire and crews extinguished it, firefighters told CBC Toronto.
Police told reporters Tuesday the building is abandoned and people have been staying both inside and in the laneway, though it’s unclear how many are doing so.
Wallace said a woman was seen walking away from the area at the time of the incident. Though she is not believed to be a suspect at this time, police are looking to speak to her.
Wallace said the fire appears suspicious but the investigation is at an early stage.
Police were originally called to the area for a dispute between a man and a woman, but it is unclear if that incident involved the woman who has been hospitalized. The man was no longer at the scene by the time officers arrived, Wallace said.
The Ontario Fire Marshall is taking lead on the investigation, but police are asking anyone with information or dashcam footage to contact them.
