A winter storm rolling through the Maritimes is expected to impact much of P.E.I. on Sunday, with the system continuing to bring snow and blustery conditions into Monday.
Environment and Climate Change Canada issued a yellow winter storm warning for eastern parts of the Island on Sunday, as well as a special weather statement for central P.E.I.
While the Island will avoid some of the heaviest snow from this storm, its rapidly dropping pressure will produce strong winds out of the north and northwest, with gusts potentially reaching 50 to 70 km/h across the Island.
Flurries and periods of light snow are slated to intensify later in the day Sunday, with moderate to heavy snow expected to fall across much of central and eastern parts of the Island into the evening and overnight hours.
Eastern P.E.I. is expected to see in excess of 20 centimetres of snow, with central regions expecting roughly 10 to 20 centimetres.
Five to 10 centimetres of snow is expected for most parts of western P.E.I., snowfall accumulation likely to be less than five centimetres in the most westerly parts of the province.
The national weather agency says poor visibility Sunday night and into Monday due to blowing and drifting snow will likely impact travel conditions. There could also be bridge restrictions.
Northumberland Ferries is warning the storm may cause service delays or cancellations between Nova Scotia and P.E.I. on Sunday. The company has already cancelled all crossings for Monday, as well as some Tuesday crossings .
