What plebiscite? Some Yukoners unaware of upcoming vote on electoral reform
CBC
When Yukoners head to the polls on Monday, they’ll face an additional ballot along with the one to select their MLA.
But some voters say they know nothing about the plebiscite on electoral reform.
The plebiscite will ask voters whether they want to ditch the current first-past-the-post system in favour of a ranked ballot system.
Speaking to CBC News in Whitehorse, Darryl Yeo couldn’t say whether he’ll vote "yes" or "no" on the plebiscite, because he said it was the first he’s heard of it.
Nikita Bailey was also unaware.
“Oh! That’s interesting … Um, I haven’ t heard about this question at all,“ she said.
Bailey was surprised that the issue didn’t even come up at a recent leaders’ election forum in Whitehorse.
“I feel like that’s very important and they should have highlighted that more when they’re talking about these discussions. Because I don’t think that’s proper community consultation at all,” she said.
Still, she said she would probably vote "no."
“I will probably vote against that decision, because that wouldn’t really be proper consensus for our community members. That’s a big decision, that’s a very huge decision, that would impact how elections would go, going forward.”
Joshua Desmarais had also never heard of the plebiscite. He also went on to say he won’t vote at all on Monday — not even for an MLA. He said he's "kinda lost faith in the system."
"They’re continuously failing us no matter what party you vote for. They never really listen to the people," he said.
"It seems to me the politicians are out for their own thing, and I feel for years we've been overlooked, not heard. So why partake in a system that I feel really won’t have any affect on the outcome?”
Liz Johnson also told CBC News she was completely unaware of the plebiscite and so has no idea how she'll vote.
