WI vs IND, 1st T20I: West Indies lost the opening T20I by 67 runs at the Brian Lara Stadium. Subsequently, they fell 0-1 down in the five-match series.
West Indies have been fined 20 percent of their match fees for a slow over rate in their first T20I against India on Friday, July 29 at the Brian Lara Stadium in Tarouba, Trinidad. The International Cricket Council (ICC) confirmed the same through a media release on Sunday, July 31.
Match referee Richie Richardson imposed the sanctions on the Caribbean players after the home team was ruled one over short of their target. Nigel Duguid and Leslie Reifer, the two on-field umpires, leveled the charges.
There was no need for a formal hearing after skipper Nicholas Pooran pleaded guilty to the charges.
“In accordance with Article 2.22 of the ICC Code of Conduct for Players and Player Support Personnel, which relates to minimum over-rate offences, players are fined 20 per cent of their match fee for every over their side fails to bowl in the allotted time,” the ICC was quoted as saying in a statement.
After losing the ODI series 0-3, West Indies made a horrendous start to the five-match T20I series. The hosts lost the opening match by 67 runs to fall 0-1 down in the series.
After being asked to chase down 191, the Caribbean team huffed and puffed to 122 for eight. As many as seven of their batters got into double digits, but failed to convert their starts. While Shamarh Brooks top-scored for them with 20, Alzarri Joseph picked up two wickets.
The second T20I is scheduled to take place on Monday, August 1 at the Warner Park in Basseterre, St Kitts.
