A 38-year-old Waterloo woman has been killed after her vehicle drove over a snowbank on the Highway 7 flyover ramp and fell onto Highway 8 below.
Ontario Provincial Police Sgt. Kerry Schmidt told CBC News the collision happened around 7:30 a.m. ET Monday.
The driver was pronounced dead at the scene after "losing control of the vehicle on the ramp and launching over the snow embankment to the highway below," he said.
"The snow and the road conditions obviously played a factor in this collision and we're going to continue to work with the road maintenance contractors and the MTO (Ministry of Transportation) to make sure that situation is remedied before we get that ramp reopened," Schmidt said in a post on X Monday afternoon.
This is the second vehicle to drive over the embankment on Monday.
Around 2 a.m., the driver of a taxi cab lost control of their vehicle on the Highway 7 ramp to Highway 8 and ended up on the highway below.
"It was further down the ramp, so it wasn't a massive drop" said Schmidt.
"To my understanding, the driver was not seriously injured, which is fortunate."
A video at the scene shows snow was pushed against the edge of the flyover ramp, making the height of the snow level with the concrete barrier.
Area roads were either snow-covered, partially covered or track bare from the potential 10 to 15 centimetres of snow that fell on Sunday.
The Highway 7 ramp is expected to be closed into the evening for the investigation.
