Gandhi, the TV series directed by Hansal Mehta, had its world premiere at the Toronto International Film Festival, 2025. It is also the first Indian series to premiere at the festival. The series, planned for three seasons, is based on biographies of Mohandas Karamchand Gandhi, by acclaimed historian Ramachandra Guha. The first season focuses on the early life of Mohandas Gandhi, before he was known as Mahatma Gandhi, centred around his days as a law student in England and a lawyer in South Africa. Film critic Meenakshi Shedde caught up with Hansal Mehta, producer Sameer Nair and lead actors Pratik Gandhi and Bhamini Oza in Toronto.
