Virat Kohli wanting to be on front foot no matter what, not helping his cause: Sanjay Manjrekar

Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) batter Virat Kohli failed to find his mojo in the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2022 after scoring three golden ducks.

Former batter Sanjay Manjrekar said that Virat Kohli’s tendency to play on the front foot, “no matter what” has led to his downfall plenty of times. The 33-year-old Kohli didn’t have the best of campaigns in Indian Premier League (IPL) 2022 despite handing the captaincy duties to Faf du Plessis.

In 16 matches, the right-hander scored 341 runs at an average of 22.73 and a strike rate of 115.98 with two half-centuries. He also fetched three golden ducks, showing his struggles in the T20 championship.

Barring his 73-run knock against the Gujarat Titans (GT) at the Wankhede Stadium, Kohli failed to make a significant impact. He also faced quite a bit of criticism for not being able to up the ante after getting his eyes in.

Manjrekar asked Kohli to tone down his natural instincts of coming on the front foot. Manjrekar also cited the example of how Kohli got out in the Qualifier 2 against the Rajasthan Royals (RR) on Friday, May 27 at the Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad.

“Virat wanting to be on the front foot no matter what is not helping his cause. Mental toughness takes you far for sure, but technical issues cannot be ignored completely. Crunch game.. front foot to a short of length bouncing ball cost him his wicket again.”

Kohli started his knock against the Royals with a colossal six, but Prasidh Krishna accounted for his prized scalp in the second over of RCB’s innings.

The Challengers have already been knocked out of the competition after their seven-wicket loss to Sanju Samson’s RR. The Royals will now face the Titans in the final on Sunday, May 29 at the Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad.
