Veterans Affairs, Service Canada offices in Charlottetown's Jean Canfield Building closed

Service Canada and Veterans Affairs offices in the Jean Canfield Building are closed following an electrical fire outside the building last week.
The Charlottetown Fire Department responded to alarms at the downtown building on the evening of March 12.
Public Services and Procurement Canada, which manages federal government properties, said in an email that an electrical transformer caught fire outside, forcing the building’s main electrical feed to be shut down.
The fire didn’t make it inside the building, but it did cause heat and smoke damage. The loss of power disabled the building's lighting, heating and cooling.
There were no injuries to maintenance staff and commissioners who were inside at the time.
While the Jean Canfield Building is closed, officials with the federal Employment and Social Development Department said Islanders can visit the Service Canada office in Montague or the eServiceCanada website, which allows people to submit request forms for assistance programs.
The Charlottetown Service Canada website has been updated with more information. Clients with appointments will be contacted about next steps.
The building remained on generator power as of Tuesday while an assessment of the damage to the electrical feed is underway. Officials said power could be restored early next week, pending further investigation.
Federal offices in the building will remain closed until those systems are restored.
