The U.S. launched missile-detecting satellites into orbit on Thursday, just hours after news of a potential Russian threat to America's military satellites.
The MDA's pair of Hypersonic and Ballistic Tracking Space Sensor (HBTSS) satellites, coupled with the SDA's Tracking Layer satellites will "detect hypersonic, ballistic, and other advanced threats earlier than terrestrial radars," according to the Pentagon. "This launch represents a pivotal time for MDA as we enter a new phase of missile warning, tracking and defense," said Lt. Gen. Heath Collins, director of MDA. "These HBTSS satellites are an essential step forward in our efforts to stay ahead of our adversaries."
