UP cancels licences of 178 private hospitals, files case against 281 after complaints

The UP government informed the Assembly that licences of 178 private hospitals were cancelled following complaints and inspections.
Uttar Pradesh government has cancelled the licences of 178 private hospitals in the state following complaints and inspections, of which 59 were later restored after hearings before the competent authority, Deputy Chief Minister Brajesh Pathak informed the Assembly on Monday. Additionally, cases had been registered against 281 hospitals that were allegedly operating in violation of norms, he added.
Around 500 complaints have been received, and "we have cancelled the licences of 178 hospitals. After cancelling the licences, the hospitals appealed to an authority, which revived the licences of 59 hospitals after hearing,” he said, replying to a question by Samajwadi Party MLA Atul Pradhan on complaints against private hospitals and the action taken.
The Deputy Chief Minister, who also holds the Medical Health portfolio, added 533 hospitals were “seized”, while notices had been issued to 1,542 hospitals directing them to improve compliance with regulations.
The government was also asked whether it planned to regulate excessive billing by private hospitals, bring uniformity in consultation fees and medical test charges, and prevent arbitrary price hikes.
To this, Pathak replied that there was currently no policy to fix consultation fees of private doctors or standardise rates for medical tests in the state. He, however, noted that free treatment, including consultation and medicines, was being provided to the public through government hospitals.
The Deputy Chief Minister further said beneficiaries under the Ayushman Bharat Pradhan Mantri Jan Arogya Yojana (PMJAY) were entitled to cashless treatment up to Rs 5 lakh in empanelled government and private hospitals under prescribed packages, while senior citizens above 70 years were covered under the Ayushman Vay Vandana Yojana.
