Body of a young Dalit woman was found at an ashram linked to a Samajwadi Party leader. The key accused his son of a former minister in the Akhilesh Yadav government. Here's how the key accused and ashram are linked to the SP and the case.
The discovery of a young woman's body at an ashram, established by a Samajwadi Party leader, in the middle of Uttar Pradesh Assembly election has caused uproar. Cornered by the ruling BJP and opposition parties Congress and BSP, SP chief Akhilesh Yadav on Friday denied his party's connection to the case. Then why is the SP making headlines in the case? Who is the key accused, Rajol Singh? How is he linked with SP? Here are some answers.
A 22-year-old Dalit woman had gone missing in December. Her parents filed a missing person's complaint on December 8 at the local police station. In their complaint, they blamed the son of an SP leader for their daughter's disappearance. The accused, Rajol Singh, is the son of Fateh Bahadur Singh, who was a minister in the erstwhile Akhilesh Yadav government.
The police allegedly did not pay any heed to their complaint. On January 24, the parents of the missing woman attempted to commit suicide by jumping in front of SP chief Akhilesh Yadav's car.
After the incident caught the public eye, the police took Rajol Singh in custody. Singh was interrogated, but the police failed to find any information on the missing woman’s whereabouts.
Finally, acting on tips from informers, the police found the Dalit woman's body buried in the ground in Divyanand Ashram.
Sources said that the woman was strangled to death. Her neck bone was broken and there was proof of injury on her head.
Divyanand Ashram was set up by former minister and then Cooperative Bank chairman Fateh Bahadur Singh. The ashram has several idols of Hindu Gods and Goddesses. Fateh Bahadur Singh died before the inauguration of the ashram.
