The fast bowler has taken the 2022 tournament by storm with his unbelieveable pace. Umran is the fourth-highest wicket-taker in the ongoing IPL, having picked up 21 wickets in 13 games so far.
Umran, the 22-year-old from Jammu and Kashmir, also holds the record for the fastest delivery in the season (157 kph).
Several former cricketers, fans and even politicians have backed Umran to be included in the national team. The latest to join the list of Umran's supporters is Sri Lanka's Chaminda Vaas. The former pacer said that the SunRisers' speedster is "getting better day by day" and predicted that he will become a "great bowler" for India.
"I think he (Umran) is getting better day by day and I saw him playing in the last IPL as well. He is bowling consistently and accuracy is important when it comes to T20. And he will be a great bowler for India. He will be there with (Jasprit) Bumrah, I guess if India gives him a chance. He will go a long way," Vaas was quoted as saying.
Earlier, Congress politician Shashi Tharoor had suggested that Umran should travel to England for the Test match.
"We need him in Indian colours asap. What a phenomenal talent. Blood him before he burns out! Take him to England for the Test match greentop. He and Bumrah bowling in tandem will terrify the Angrez! #UmranMalik," Tharoor had tweeted.
