The U.S. military says it has carried out another deadly strike on a vessel accused of trafficking drugs in the eastern Pacific Ocean.
WASHINGTON (AP) — The U.S. military said Thursday that it has carried out another deadly strike on a vessel accused of trafficking drugs in the eastern Pacific Ocean.
U.S. Southern Command said on social media that the boat “was transiting along known narco-trafficking routes in the Eastern Pacific and was engaged in narco-trafficking operations.” It said the strike killed two people. A video linked to the post shows a boat moving through the water before exploding in flames.
The strike was announced just hours after U.S. Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth declared that “some top cartel drug-traffickers” in the region “have decided to cease all narcotics operations INDEFINITELY due to recent (highly effective) kinetic strikes in the Caribbean.” However, Hegseth did not provide any details or information to back up this claim, made in a post on his personal account on social media.
Neither U.S. Southern Command nor the Pentagon would answer follow-up questions about Hegseth’s claim.
Thursday’s strike raises the death toll from the Trump administration’s strikes on alleged drug boats to 128 people. Last week, the military said that figure was up to 126 people, with the inclusion of those presumed dead after being lost at sea. That figure included 116 people who were killed immediately in at least 36 attacks carried out since early September in the Caribbean Sea and eastern Pacific Ocean, U.S. Southern Command said. Ten others are believed dead because searchers did not locate them following a strike.
"There are many stresses on our economy, and this could be the straw that breaks the camel’s back — a straw that becomes heavier the longer the war goes on."
Voters in two Texas counties faced long wait times and had questions about polling locations.
Rep. Jared Moskowitz (D-Fla.) gave Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem a gift that was a nod to one of her most embarrassing moments in office.
"ICE can deny wrongdoing, but the reality remains the same: Alberto Gutierrez Reyes died while in their custody," Los Angeles City Councilmember Eunisses Hernandez told HuffPost.
"This will definitely be temporary," U.S. Energy Secretary Chris Wright told the "Ingraham Angle" program on Fox News.
One soldier was from California, and the other hailed from Iowa.
The DHS secretary referred to Rep. Sydney Kamlager-Dove's question as "tabloid garbage" but never directly answered "no" to the question.
The press secretary suggested during the briefing that many in the White House Press Corps had "fallen for" Iranian "propaganda."
Unions say that by weakening seniority protections, the proposal would pave the way for politically motivated firings.
The defense secretary bemoaned the “tragic things” that make “front page news.”
“It’s like what happened to Kamala Harris. Whatever identity JD Vance had going that was different from Donald Trump’s is gone," Chuck Todd said.
Allred held a strong lead against the congresswoman in Tuesday’s primary election, but fell short of the votes needed to win the race outright.
The California governor made his remarks during a speaking event Tuesday in Los Angeles to promote his new memoir.
