Trump, Musk Clash Over Spending As Republicans Mull 'Big, Beautiful Bill': Live Updates

The relationship between the president and his billionaire former sidekick has soured over Trump's bill.
The once-close relationship between President Donald Trump and billionaire Elon Musk has soured considerably over Trump’s “big beautiful bill” after Musk announced he was leaving his post under Trump and called the president’s sweeping tax measure a “disgusting abomination.”
The pair has spent much of the week taking increasingly aggressive pot shots at each other in social media posts and press appearances. Musk on Wednesday posted that Senate Republicans should vote to “KILL the BILL,” which would add trillions to the deficit while cutting Medicaid and other programs benefitting the poor.
“A new spending bill should be drafted that doesn’t massively grow the deficit and increase the debt ceiling by 5 TRILLION DOLLARS,” Musk posted.
Trump on Thursday said he was “very disappointed” in Musk — who served briefly as the head of Trump’s new Department of Government Efficiency, or DOGE — and wondered aloud whether the pair’s relationship would survive the billionaire’s ongoing attacks.
Meanwhile, Congress is back this week from its Memorial Day break. But Trump’s tax bill remains in limbo as some Senate Republicans have voiced concerns similar to Musk’s in recent days.
