The former lawmaker is a staunch supporter of President Donald Trump and has been in legal trouble before.
Former Rep. Madison Cawthorn (R-N.C.) on Wednesday was arrested in Florida after failing to appear in court for an arraignment in Collier County, according to Gulf Coast News. The ex-congressman was cited by Naples police in August for driving with a suspended license.
Cawthorn was due in court at 8:30 a.m. Wednesday for the misdemeanor, but his failure to show prompted a warrant, according to the Collier County Clerk of Courts. The former lawmaker told Gulf Coast News he was arrested at his Cape Coral home by local police.
“Former Congressman, Madison Cawthorn, was arrested earlier today for failure to appear for a routine traffic infraction,” according to a statement he shared with the outlet. “Madison keeps a very busy schedule and, due to a scheduling misunderstanding, did not appear in court this morning. Following processing Madison was immediately released.”
Lee County Sheriff’s Office records show Cawthorn was released on a $2,000 bond.
Cawthorn is a staunch supporter of President Donald Trump. He lost his congressional reelection bid in North Carolina in 2022, but is rumored to be considering a run in Florida’s 19th Congressional District.
