President Donald Trump on Thursday championed his federal takeover of Washington, D.C., by thanking police officers, federal agents and National Guard troops in a sprawling speech — which quickly devolved into a rant about how “hot” and “big” artificial intelligence is.
Trump federalized D.C.’s Metropolitan Police Department earlier this month to quell the supposed “bedlam” there, even though violent crime in the city is at a 30-year low, and spoke Thursday at the U.S. Park Police’s Anacostia operations facility to tout the effort.
While he began by praising law enforcement for the “fantastic job” they’ve done, Trump soon lauded Saudi Arabia, Qatar and the United Arab Emirates for investing in the U.S. tech sector — and said he’ll build “all sorts of plants all over the country.”
These “plants” included AI data centers, which Trump went on to passionately describe.
“We wouldn’t be able to compete with China AI,” he told the crowd of law enforcement. “And now we’re totally leading the AI race, and the artificial intelligence, it’s a big deal and it’s the hottest thing there is for probably, in 35, 40 years.
