Toronto weekend weather timeline: What you need to know about extreme cold, Sunday snow
CBC
The Greater Toronto Area is bracing for a brutal weekend of winter weather with extreme cold temperatures and a snow storm that could drop up to 30 centimetres of snow.
Here’s a timeline of what to expect and when, based on information from Environment Canada and CBC Toronto meteorologist Colette Kennedy.
It is worth noting current weather models aren’t fully in agreement. CBC Toronto will update this story as we learn more.
Flurries starting this afternoon are expected to end early in the evening, but will be followed by some extremely chilly temperatures.
Environment Canada has issued a yellow weather warning for wind chills near -30 and -33.
Be sure to cover up, as any exposed skin could lead to frostbite within minutes at these temperatures, said the national weather agency’s warning.
The extreme cold warning is set to continue into the morning.
Don’t be fooled by the sunny weather. The morning air will feel more like -30 C. The afternoon will warm up slightly to feel like a still frigid -18 C.
Sometime after midnight the snow will start falling by Lake Ontario, though the larger storm system is still approaching due to east wind.
Current models expect the actual storm to hit around 11 a.m. and continue throughout most of Sunday. This storm is expected to drop between 20 to 30 centimetres of snow by the time it’s done.
Right now, it looks like the heaviest snow will hit from 2-7 p.m.
However, there’s a chance it might arrive a little later in the day.
Environment Canada warns travel will likely be impacted across the GTA.
Don’t be surprised if it’s still snowing hard in the evening.
