Toronto could receive up to 10 centimetres of snow starting overnight Tuesday into Wednesday morning or afternoon, Environment Canada says.
The snowfall is expected to be significant, the federal weather agency said in a special weather statement Tuesday.
Heavy snow, along with blowing snow, could reduce visibility and travel may become difficult at times, Environment Canada said. Residents are urged to allow extra time for travel.
Toronto is also under a freezing drizzle advisory.
Both weather alerts in place for the city are colour-coded yellow, meaning the impacts of the weather are considered to moderate, localized or short term in duration. Yellow means "hazardous weather" that may cause damage or disruption and may affect health.
An Alberta clipper will bring the snow to the city, which is expected to be heavy at times.
Freezing drizzle could lead to icy surfaces that could be difficult to detect, Environment Canada said in the freezing drizzle advisory.
The freezing drizzle is expect to continue Tuesday evening and possibly continue overnight into Wednesday.
Mississauga and Brampton are also under a special weather statement and freezing drizzle advisory.
Other parts of the GTA, namely north and south Durham Region, north York Region and Markham, Vaughan and Richmond Hill are under a snowfall warning and freezing drizzle advisory.
