Commuters in the Tiruvottiyur and Kodambakkam zones may face fewer parking hassles in the future once the Greater Chennai Corporation’s (GCC) plan to set up two automated multi-level parking projects comes to fruition. While a new facility for two-wheelers is planned in Tiruvottiyur, in Kodambakkam, the facility will cater to both two- and four-wheelers.
In Tiruvottiyur, a 1,563.62 sq. metre-facility will come up adjacent to the Municipality Dispensary Complex; it will also house a commercial complex. The project will be able to accomodate 1,052 two-wheelers.
Further, the multi-level parking facility in Kodambakkam is expected to be built on a one-acre plot of land owned by the GCC, located in Division 132, near the Kodambakkam Bridge. The project site would cover 1,667 sq. metres and will provide parking for 422 two-wheelers and 75 four-wheelers.
Both parking facilities will be equipped with CCTV surveillance, security personnel, and essential public amenities such as toilets and drinking water facilities, according to the documents shared by the GCC. The projects in both places will feature an automated fee-collection system and a traffic management plan, the documents said.
The entrance points to these two facilities are expected to be directly accessible from the road, with no structures in between.
Further, real-time data on parking slot availability will also be displayed, according to the documents shared by the GCC. The projects are being developed on a Design, Build, Finance, Operate and Transfer (DBFOT) basis for 25 years.
Venugopal A.V., programme manager at Institute for Transportation and Development Policy (ITDP) India, said: “To ensure the success of any off-street parking facility, it is critical that streets within a 500-metre radius have effective priced parking management, ideally priced higher to ensure utilisation of the off-street space.”
