A three-year-old pregnant plains zebra died at the Bannerghatta Biological Park (BNP) Zoo on Tuesday morning following an accident.
BNP officials said that the zebra named Kavya injured herself by crashing into the chain-link mesh fence and succumbed to the shock. “With a heavy heart we would like to inform that on June 10, during the early morning hours, we lost our plains zebra Kavya in an accident,” Surya Sen A.V., executive director of BNP, said.
He added that the zebra was born on April 4, 2022, and was pregnant. “A preliminary investigation suggests external stress from other male zebras or other wild predator entry into the zoo premise which is under scrutiny. She was pregnant and was expected to give birth in a few months,” he added.
Environment Minister Eshwar Khandre has sought a report on the unnatural death. The Minister has instructed officials to investigate the cause of the death and to submit a report. He also directed officials to take precautions, ensure the safety of wild animals, and prevent the unnatural death of the animals in captivity.
