
Three chain snatchers arrested in Yellapur

The Udupi district police, in association with Uttara Kannada district police, have arrested three persons on charges of assaulting an elderly woman in Brahmavar, Udupi district, and stealing her 40-gram gold chain on Saturday.

The police identified the arrested persons as Gourish Rohidas Karkera, 37, from North Goa, Mainuddin Bagalkot, 31, from Sindhagi taluk of Vijayapura district, and Surjith Gautam Kar, 27, from Maharashtra.
In a press release, the police said that around 7 a.m. the three persons, now arrested, arrived in a white car to Adarsh Nagar in Varamballi village where the elderly woman was plucking flowers outside her house. While one of the accused got out of the car and approached the woman, the other two drove ahead and parked a few meters away from the house.
The one who approached the woman hit her on her head. When she collapsed, he dragged her on the road and snatched her gold chain. He then ran towards the car and all the accused drove away. The injured woman was admitted to the hospital where the police recorded her complaint.
A team led by Brahmavar Circle Inspector K.R. Gopalakrishna went through CCTV footage of checkposts and toll gates and found that the car had moved towards Honnavar in Uttara Kannada district.
Following an alert, the Uttara Kannada police found that the car had passed through the toll plaza in Honnavar. The team led by Yellapur Police Inspector Ramesh Hanapur tracked the movement of car and found it abandoned in Hutukumane in Anagod Panchayat of Yellapur taluk.
Suspecting the accused of entering the forest in the vicinity, the police combed the forest for about six hours and arrested the three on Saturday evening. The police seized the stolen gold chain and the car from the accused, the release stated.
