A fire burning for more than two weeks inside two condo buildings in Thorncliffe Park has been extinguished and residents will return to their units in stages, according to officials.Toronto Fire Services has been fighting the blaze at 11 Thorncliffe Park Drive and 21 Overlea Boulevard since it started on Nov. 27.
In a statement on Monday night, Toronto Fire Chief Jim Jessop and Kamal Gogna, the City of Toronto’s interim chief building official and the executive director of Toronto Building, said they informed residents of the development earlier Monday evening.
Jessop and Gogna said "firefighting suppression operations" have ended at the two connected buildings.
"With firefighting suppression operations complete, the next phase will begin tomorrow, where property management firms will work with third-party engineers to carry out full engineering assessments of the buildings," Jessop and Gogna said in the statement.
"Once the engineering assessments are complete and reviewed by the City, residents will receive direct communication from their property management company with next steps."
Jessop and Gogna said conditions vary throughout the buildings and return to occupancy will happen in "a phased-in approach," as determined by two property management firms.
The fire burned combustible particle board placed in an expansion joint between the two buildings.
A total of 408 units had to be evacuated, and the city said earlier this month that 239 people from 119 households have been staying in 131 hotel rooms, with support coming from the Canadian Red Cross.
The city said Jessop and Gogna will provide an update on the situation on Tuesday morning.
