The past year included a Canadian election, an Ontario election and countless stories about Canada’s relationship with the U.S. in the wake of the Trump administration.
The trial of five former Hockey Canada players — who were eventually found not guilty of sexual assault — also dominated headlines.
In northeastern Ontario, some of the year’s most read stories included an account of a small town’s financial crisis, a man’s story of how he survived a road rage incident, and how the MPP for Sault Ste. Marie was kicked out of the Progressive Conservative caucus after he was charged with assault.
Below are the five most read stories in our region for 2025.
In September, Sault Ste. Marie MPP Chris Scott was removed from Doug Ford’s caucus after he was charged with assault and assault with a weapon.
CBC News later reported Scott was charged for alleged spousal assault.
He has not stepped down as the MPP for Sault Ste. Marie and continues to sit as an independent while his case progresses through the court system.
In June, we published an unusual story about how an archaeologist based in New Liskeard discovered a mysterious carving with runic symbols in the northern Ontario wilderness.
The archeologist learned the runic writing spelled out the words of The Lord's Prayer in Swedish and traced it back to a 1611 runic version of the prayer, which was republished in the 19th century.
The Hudson's Bay Company hired Swedes in the 1800s to work at trading posts in the Canadian wilderness, including the Michipicoten post, not too far from where the carving was found. The theory is that one of those workers carved the symbols.
The small northern Ontario municipality of Fauquier-Strickland told residents over the summer that if it didn’t raise property taxes by around 200 per cent, most municipal services would have to shut down by Aug. 1.
CBC Sudbury published several stories about the municipality’s including this one, about new resident Coleen Thompson, who purchased a home in Fauquier before news of its financial crisis broke.
James Turner of New Liskeard posted dashcam footage of a near death experience following a road rage incident in late December 2024.
A 37-year-old driver was later charged with several counts of dangerous operation of a motor vehicle and assaulting a police officer following the incident.
