United States forces struck targets on Kharg Island, an area vital to Iran’s oil industry, as President Donald Trump presses Iranian leaders to allow for passage through the Strait of Hormuz.
The overnight strikes did not impact the islands oil infrastructure, U.S. and Iranian officials said. But Trump issued an ultimatum after the attack saying he would consider additional actions if Iran continued to block commercial ships from freely moving through the shipping route.
The Strait of Hormuz is key to global trade, where about one-fifth of the world’s oil passes. It’s become a major flashpoint in the war.
