A Special Investigation Team has been formed to investigate the July 17 protests in Tamil Nadu’s Kallakurichi district over the death of a Class 12 girl inside the school hostel premises, as per the directions issued by the Madras HC.

A Special Investigation Team (SIT) has been formed to investigate into the July 17 protests in Tamil Nadu’s Kallakurichi district over the death of a Class 12 girl inside the school hostel premises.

This development comes after the Madras High Court on Monday directed the Director General of Police (DGP) to form a special team to identify the violators, who were captured very well in all the video footage, and bring them before the court of law.

The investigation team will be headed by Praveen Kumar Abhinapu, who is the Deputy Inspector General in the Salem range. Abhinapu will be assisted by five high ranking officials.

The SIT has been tasked to unearth the entire conspiracy behind the incident, identify all violators captured in videos, and those who formed Whatsapp groups and spread false news resulting in protests, and take action as per law.

The SIT has also been tasked with taking appropriate action against YouTubers who had allegedly spread false news and purportedly conducted a “parallel media trial” and take steps to block such YouTube channels. The investigative team has also been directed to periodically report the progress of the investiture to the Director General of Police (DGP) and file a status report during the next day of the hearing, which is July 29.

Meanwhile, Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M K Stalin took stock of the situation on Tuesday and chaired a high-level meeting with School Education Minister Anbil Mahesh Poyyamozhi and senior officials, through video conference.

Though protests had been going on since the girl's death, the agitation turned violent on Sunday, July 17.
