Tamil Nadu student suicide: DMK MLA welcomes prime accused outside prison

DMK MLA Inigo Irudayaraj stoked a controversy as he reached the Trichy Central Prison to welcome Sagaya Mary, the prime accused in Thanjavur student suicide case in Tamil Nadu.

Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK) MLA Inigo Irudayaraj sparked a row after he went to the Trichy Central prison to welcome Sagaya Mary, the prime accused in the Thanjavur student suicide case in Tamil Nadu.

The MLA shared pictures of him welcoming Sagaya Mary with a shawl on his Facebook page after she walked out of the prison on bail. He stated in his post that Sagaya Mary sacrificed herself for educating poor children.

"Sister Sagaya Mari, the caretaker of the Pure Heart High School hostel, who devoted herself to the educational development of poor children in villages at the age of 62, was arrested following an unforeseen incident at Thanjavur district's Thirukattupalli Michaelpatti," he said.

"Knowing that she was released by the court with the determination and honesty to face the case, I went to the Trichy Women's Central Jail in person and welcomed her. Justice will prevail. We will continue to work for religious harmony," he added in his post.

The case caused a political storm after BJP State President Annamalai released a 44-second dying declaration video of the deceased student where she said she was forced into religious conversion and was allegedly tortured for the same.

The Madurai Bench of the Madras High Court transferred the case to the CBI on January 31. The BJP blamed the DMK for not cooperating with the CBI.

On January 19, a Class 12 girl in Tamil Nadu’s Thanjavur died in the hospital after not responding to treatment. She had consumed pesticide on January 9, after she was allegedly forced to clean rooms and other menial work. It is also alleged that she was forced to convert to Christianity.
